Torrey Pines wins Open Division CIF Baseball Final with a 2-1 10 inning game over Poway

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Saturday, June 2, 2018-For the first time since 1994, the Falcons of Torrey Pines have concluded their season at 29-6 as they defeated the Titans of Poway at 27-8 by a 2-1 10 inning thriller.

Poway scored their first run in the 3rd inning as Ivran Romero doubled, stole 3b and scored on a Kevin Van Linge sacrifice fly to left field as the Titans led 1-0.

The Falcons tied the game in the bottom of the 5th at 1-1 as 8th batter Ty McGuire tripled and scored on Max Bingham's single

In the bottom of the 10th inning with the game tied at 1-1 Kevin Sim who went 1 for 4 delivered the game winning double and rbi past Poway rightfielder Trevor Tishenkel as Jake Plashkes scored to make the final score 2-1 in favor of Torrey Pines.

Kurt McCaskill former Major League Pitcher and current Torrey Pines Coach: "It was a classic baseball game played by 2 solid teams that battled hard on the field." " I am proud of our pitching but worried about Poway's pitcher but they did an excellent job and we were fortunate to win it."

Torrey Pines Kevin Sim on the game winning rbi: "I hit an outside curveball they have been working outside on me all day when it was my turn at the plate, in my last appearance in the 10th I saw rightfield wide open and picked my spot to look for a good hit." "I have been struggling in my earlier at bats in the day chasing pitches and tried to stay with them and finally I hit the game winner."

Matt Schlesner get the win in relief for Torrey Pines as he pitched 2 innings and struck out 3 batters.

This is Torrey Pines 3rd appearance in the CIF Championship game and for Poway is their 11th appearance. Both make appearances in the Open Division.
