City Of Del Mar: Residents Responding To Solid Waste Survey

Nearly 100 respondents have participated so far in the City of Del Mar’s solid waste survey.

The City issued the survey June 22 as it prepares to advertise for a long-term solid waste and recycling hauler. To inform the solicitation, residents and businesses are asked to complete a brief survey by 4:30 p.m. July 23.

To date, the survey has received 92 responses that have taken an average of 10 minutes to complete. Residential and commercial account holders report general satisfaction with existing services.

To the question of “What is most important in a solid waste program?” the leading answer was environmental sustainability, followed by customer service, then low rates.

More than half of respondents said they are familiar with Del Mar’s options for household hazardous waste disposal and more than half responded that they were satisfied or very satisfied with those options.

On the topic of recycling organic material and food waste, which is set to become mandatory under state law, the leading concern of respondents was odors and pests. Respondents were almost equally concerned, however, by contributing to climate change as a result of inaction. Other food waste recycling concerns, from most to least, include: keeping bins and containers clean; space constraints; rate increases, and inconvenience.

A strong majority of respondents answered that it was “very important” to them to divert materials from landfills to promote environmental sustainability.
