City Of Del Mar: Subcommittee Formed For North Commercial Zone Referendum

The City Council on Jan. 21 agreed to form an ad hoc subcommittee to discuss alternatives to a ballot initiative with the organizer of the referendum.The organizer, Del Mar resident Arnold Wiesel, initiated the referendum to repeal an ordinance approved in October that established 20 dwelling unit per acre uses within the City’s North Commercial Zone on Jimmy Durante Boulevard at San Dieguito Drive. State laws require the City to accommodate such zoning to support the development of housing for low-income households.The ad hoc subcommittee will include Mayor Terry Gaasterland and Councilmember Dave Druker. Council members Tracy Martinez and Dan Quirk had recused themselves from the discussion because they own property near the North Commercial Zone.If the subcommittee’s talks do not reach a compromise, the consensus of Gaasterland, Druker and Deputy Mayor Dwight Worden is to submit the referendum to voters no later than November 2022. Open staff report (PDF)Watch meeting video
