Del Mar Heights-Based Cardium Enters Distribution Agreement

Cardium Therapeutics announced a distribution agreement with Academy Medical to market, sell and distribute its leading commercial product for wound care.

Cardium Therapeutics, a health sciences and regenerative medicine company in Del Mar Heights, announced Thursday a distribution agreement with Academy Medical to market, sell and distribute its leading commercial product to government medical providers, including the Veterans Administration  and military hospitals. It's product, Excellagen, is a FDA-cleared wound care product. 

Excellagen is a syringe-based, professional-use, gel designed to accelerate the growth of tissue and activate the healing process.

"As the U.S. health care market continues to expand due to the aging population and with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, simpler-use and more cost-effective medical products like Excellagen have an opportunity to expand and grow within outcomes-oriented health care settings," stated Christopher J. Reinhard, Chairman and CEO of Cardium in an announcement.

Reinhard added, "Our agreement with Academy Medical expands Cardium's tactical access and distribution capabilities for Excellagen as we advance forward with our planned U.S. strategic partnering activities."

Academy Medical's initial focus will be to provide education and training on the use of Excellagen in the treatment of traumatic wounds, pressure and diabetic ulcers, limb salvage and post-skin cancer surgery.

Reinhard said the firm will focus on outreach to podiatry, wound care centers, hospitals, long-term care facilities, government medical service providers and dermatology providers.

Cardium’s current portfolio consists of the Tissue Repair Company, Cardium Biologics and the firm's in-house MedPodium Health Sciences healthy lifestyle product platform.
