8 Hospitalized After Panga Boat Capsizes Off Encinitas Coast
Several people attempting to enter the U.S. were cast into the water after a panga-style boat capsized in San Diego County.

ENCINITAS, CA — Eight people were hospitalized after a panga-style boat capsized while attempting to enter Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, officials said. Occupants of the boat were attempting to enter the U.S. illegally, according to the U.S. Border Patrol San Diego Sector.
The incident was reported at 5 a.m. after agents were alerted of the suspicious vessel. Shortly after, agents responded and found the sinking boat near the shore with 18 lifejackets nearby.
By the shore, agents discovered eight people who had entered the country illegally. Seven Mexican nationals and one Guatamalan national were identified, officials said.

Passengers were immediately given medical attention and taken to a hospital for treatment of hypothermia symptoms.
“Smuggling along the California coastline is inherently dangerous for all of the involved parties,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “I’m thankful that our agents and partners stand ready to combat all threats against our coastal borders.”

Once the passengers are "medically cleared," officials said they would be taken to a Border Patrol station. The vessel was seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations.
