Encinitas Invited to Deep-Pit Barbecue this Weekend

If you know good barbecue, you know slow cooking it in the ground makes for some of the tastiest meat you’ll ever try. That’s how settlers in this area did it once upon a time—and this weekend the will be paying homage to that old school method with a deep-pit barbecue, and the community is invited to come chow down.

If you’d like to try some chuck roll done right, head over to the museum Saturday from noon to 2:30 for the annual barbecue, which is now in its 24^th year.

During the barbecue, you can checkout some of the vintage vehicles on display, including a 1917 Model T Ford, a 1957 fire engine from the Del Mar Fire Department—and even an original stagecoach, just to name a few. There will also be a bake sale and live music, courtesy of Two of Us Plus One. If you have kids in tow, there will be plenty of family-friendly activities—and there will be silent auction and $100 cash drawing, too.

Because the event aims to celebrate local heritage, two residents will also be honored for their contributions: Richard and Adeline Bumann will be presented with the Living Heritage award for their work in preserving the Bumann Ranch, a 10-acre homestead built in 1886 that still stands largely untouched.  

Tickets are $25 for adults in advance (or $30 at the door); $20 for teens (ages 13 to 17), $10 for children (ages 5 to 12); and everyone 5 and younger is admitted for free with an adult.
