Arbor Day Foundation Names Encinitas 'Tree City USA'

Encinitas officials say the local foliage comes with a laundry list of benefits.

In honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management, the city of Encinitas has been named the "2016 Tree City USA."

Encinitas achieved the recognition this month by meeting the program's four requirements: A tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation, according to a news alert.

“We are honored to have been named a Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation," Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blackspear said, in a statement. "Recognizing the many environmental, social and economic benefits that can be derived from trees, the city of Encinitas has a vested interest in continuing to develop of a healthy urban forest community."
