Best Encinitas Eats: The 101 Diner’s Baked Apple Pancake

By Roy Rivenburg

If I’m ever on Death Row and about to be executed, this would be my request for a last meal: the 101 Diner’s baked apple pancake, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Bubbling with brown sugar, cinnamon and butter, it’s part breakfast, part dessert, part cardiac arrest.

I also give it a slight edge over the Original Pancake House’s version, if only because many OPH franchises don’t offer vanilla ice cream, which cools down the oven-hot confection and complements the flavors perfectly.

$8.95 (add $1.95 for ice cream) at the 101 Diner, 552 S. Coast Highway 101, Encinitas.
