Kranz, Hinze Lead In Encinitas City Council Election: Results

Four candidates ran for two open seats on the Encinitas City Council.

ENCINITAS, CA — Encinitas residents in Districts 1 and 2 chose who they want to represent them on the City Council in Tuesday's general election.

As of Wednesday morning, incumbent Tony Kranz held a lead over Alex Riley for the District 1 seat, according to unofficial vote totals from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. Kellie Hinze, who was previously appointed to the council, held a sizable lead over Susan Turney for the District 2 seat.

The City Council consists of an elected mayor and four elected council members. The mayor serves a two-year term, while council members serve four-year terms.

It was unclear how many votes remained to be tallied, and with the prevalence of mail ballots in Tuesday's election, it could be days or weeks before final numbers are determined.

There are still 370,000 ballots left to be counted, County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu announced Wednesday, but the county will not release additional results until 5 p.m. Thursday.
