Man Hides Under Car, Can't Escape K9 Unit

Hiding under a car from a police dog did not work for a man who had been driving the wrong way on Interstate 5 Saturday, and the man had some dog teeth mark-shaped wounds to prove it.

The driver of a small red station wagon was spotted heading against freeway traffic near Lomas Santa Fe shortly before 4 a.m., sheriff's Lt. Jason Vickery said.

Deputies attempted to stop the driver, but he continued to a storage business at 477 Stevens Ave. There, he ran from the car and jumped over a security fence, Vickery said.

Deputies surrounded the business and called in Escondido police officers and their dogs to search for the suspect, Vickery said.

Once he was located, the suspect refused to comply with the law enforcement officers' instructions, and he was bitten by a police dog, Vickery said.

The man was was taken to Palomar Medical Center for dog bite treatment, then arrested and booked for suspicion of drunken driving and failure to yield, Vickery said. He was held at the Vista Detention Facility, but his name was not immediately available.
