Overnight Rail Work Continues In Cardiff

SANDAG and Caltrans will continue overnight road and rail work in both north and south county.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA – The San Diego Association of Governments and Caltrans will complete overnight road and rail work at 5 a.m. Thursday in both north and south county.

In Cardiff-by-the-Sea, work crews will work along the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo rail corridor, which serves the North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak commuter rail companies and the freight line BNSF. Work crews will continue installing handrails on the eastern and western sides of the recently completed San Elijo Lagoon rail bride.

The work began at 9 p.m. Wednesday. It will continue each weeknight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through July 30 and require the closure of a section of rail track along the corridor.

The corridor work is part of SANDAG's Build NCC (North Coast Corridor) program, a 40-year, $700 million effort to repair and expand vehicle and rail transportation infrastructure throughout the county. Once completed, the county anticipates adding a total of 13 miles of new carpool and high-occupancy vehicle freeway lanes, 1-1/2 miles of doubled railroad track, seven miles of bike and pedestrian paths and more than 1,200 acres of restored and preserved coastal habitat land.

In National City, crews will close the outer-most lane on southbound Interstate 805 between Sweetwater and Bonita roads as well as the freeway's on- ramp at Sweetwater Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The closures are necessary to make safety improvements to the ramps along the freeway and at the freeway's interchange with state Route 54.

According to SANDAG, residents who live near the interchange are advised to expect various construction noises and the use of heavy machinery during the nighttime work period.

The work is part of the $42 million I-805 South Corridor Enhancement Project series, which is intended to improve freeway traffic flows between East Naples Street in Chula Vista and Route 54.

Work crews plan to eventually make improvements to the Sweetwater River Bridge and finish the installation of sound wall segments along I-805 to reduce noise pollution that affects residents living near the freeway.
