Thanksgiving Holiday Lagoon Walk
Friends and family in town? Show them San Elijo Lagoon. Rejuvenate together in naturalist-guided tour Saturday, November 28 at 10 am.
Fall colors are revealed in the plants at San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, one of San Diego’s largest protected coastal wetlands. See the red berries of toyon and white flowers of coyote brush. Slender, silvery fish, called mullet, often leap from lagoon waters. As bottom-feeders, it’s likely these fishes are dislodging silt from their gills.
Here come the birds! As winter approaches the lagoon will fill with winged visitors during the Pacific flyway migration, here to rest and refuel at our important and remaining wetlands. See a variety of shorebirds and ducks, among other residents and visitors, which account for 40% of North America’s bird species. This is a birding hot spot.
San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy naturalists will guide a public tour on Saturday, November 28 from 10-11 am. Walk begins and ends at San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, located at 2710 Manchester Avenue in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
