Want to Live in One of the Famed Boathouses? Now’s Your Chance

The SS Moonlight is up for rent.

For decades locals and tourists alike have adored that pair of boathouses in Old Encinitas—though most have never actually seen the inside of them. However, now is your chance to get a very up close look inside one because the SS Moonlight is up for rent.

The two-bedroom home rents for $1,850 per month, and features an upstairs office, one-and-a-half bathrooms, and two decks. The 900-square-foot house was recently upgraded with new carpet and paint, and your rent includes water and trash service fees. But sorry, if you have pets, no animals are allowed.

Of course, you’ll also have to be OK with a steady stream of onlookers outside your front door. But on the bright side, you’ll be walking distance to the beach and this is likely the only chance you’ll ever have to live in a prime example of novelty architecture. Also, you’ll be supporting Encinitas history. The homes, which were built in the 1920s using recycled timber from the old Moonlight Beach dance hall, are owned by the Encinitas Preservation Association—so, your monthly rent payment will help the group continue its mission.
