Vin Diesel leads the returning cast of “F9: The Fast Saga,” the latest entry in the “Fast and Furious,” the muscle-car franchise known for its tire-burning and adrenaline-inducing thrills in a universe inhabited by a ragtag team of skillful, death-defying motorheads led by Dom Toretto (Diesel).

The new installment, which once again explores the series’ core theme of family, opens with a flashback sequence that harks back to 1989 Los Angeles with the tragic loss of Dom’s father in a life-shattering speedway incident. Seemingly, it appears Dom’s long-estranged younger sibling brother, Jakob (John Cena), was responsible for their dad’s death.

Presently, Dom has settled down quite comfortably into family life with his wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and their young son. However, his recent reunion with the wicked Jakob would not bode well for Dom, setting in motion our hero’s next globe-trotting mission to save humanity, joined by his ever-amazing pit crew (Jordana Brewster, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Tyrese Gibson and Nathalie Emmanuel).

Ultimately, science be damned, as the gang challenges nature’s laws of physics beyond belief in this ever-beguiling saga of fast cars and explosive twists and turns, including the jaw-shocking reappearance of the presumed-dead Han (Sung Kang), who was introduced in the third installment, "Tokyo Drift."

See it. The franchise still has enough petroleum to keep revving up — though at times “F9” could feel overlong and wearisome. Tip: Make sure to leave your thinking hats at home — once again.
