Film Review: 'Captain Marvel'
Find out what we thought about the highly-anticipated superhero film starring Brie Larson, Jude Law and Samuel L. Jackson.
"Captain Marvel," the 21st Marvel Cinematic Universe film, has finally come to life on the big screen!
The film opens in the extraterrestrial world of Hala, home of the scientifically-advanced race of Kree. Our main protagonist (Brie Larson) is neither known as Captain Marvel nor Carol Danvers. Instead, she is identified as Veers, a member of an elite Kree military unit called Starforce, led by her mentor, Yon-Rogg (Jude Law).

Yon-Rogg tells Veers to control her emotions in order to harness her super strength. Kree's omnipotent being, called Supreme Intelligence (Annette Bening), even echoes the same sentiment. But Veers feels trapped as she is constantly beset with mysterious dreams and flashes about her past. She has become increasingly desperate for answers.

The sci-fi film then transports moviegoers to Earth in the year 1995, where Veers continues her quest for the missing pieces of her life. Along the way, she encounters a series of key players who will ultimately help her solve the puzzle.
The first one is S.H.I.E.L.D. spy agent Nick Fury, with whom Veers develops an infectious buddy-cop chemistry. (Fun fact: Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Fury, was digitally de-aged by 25 years for the entire film!)

She also meets ex-Air Force test pilot Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) who shares that her long-lost best friend Carol Danvers has been missing for six years. Tao (Ben Mendelsohn), a high-ranking member of the shape-shifting alien race Skrulls, also comes into the picture. Then, suddenly, a scene-stealing, mysterious cat named Goose appears out of nowhere.

In the end, the movie comes full circle as Veers untangles her past and emerges as the superhero Captain Marvel. Could she really be the most powerful Marvel Avenger of all time? The answer could lie in her photons of energy, glowing cosmic eyes and formidable light speed.
All in all, “Captain Marvel” soars, albeit with a slow take-off to the celestial tale that was revealed in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise. But one thing is certain: Brie Larson simply rocks as Captain Marvel! Plus, we loved its female-empowerment soundtrack and the time trip back to the '90s, when slow dial-up internet ruled the day and a pager was the best tool for two-way messaging (Yes, Millennials, you heard us correctly).
Make sure to stick around for the post-credits scenes to see why Captain Marvel’s next outing is “Avengers: Endgame.” She could be the Avengers' last hope to destroy the super-evil Thanos from “Avengers: Infinity War.”
