Golden Globes Will Not Be Broadcast On NBC In 2022

The network is the latest power figure to distance itself from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association over a lack of diversity.

The news comes only days after Netflix announced they would not participate in any HFPA activities until "meaningful changes were made."

HOLLYWOOD, CA — NBC has announced they will not broadcast the 2022 Golden Globes, adding to a growing list of major companies distancing themselves from Hollywood Foreign Press Association. HFPA has been receiving widespread pressure after it was revealed in February the organization had zero Black members and was accused of fostering a "culture of corruption" in a Los Angeles Times expose.

"We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform," NBC said in a statement. "However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.

"As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023."

HFPA has suffered a stretch of public-facing embarrassments since the original Times piece where members aired out their grievances toward the organization. More recently, former HFPA president Phil Berk received backlash after calling Black Lives Matter "a racist hate movement" and attacking co-founder Patrisse Cullors in an email sent out to members.

Berk was later expelled from the organization after criticism spread.

Last week, HFPA announced a list of structural changes designed to improve diversity. The plan would add 20 members this year and a 50% membership increase over the next 18 months, along with loosening membership requirements and focusing on adding Black journalists.

"We want to reaffirm our commitment to bringing Black and racially diverse members into our organization, which we feel can be accomplished by lifting many of the membership barriers, building pipelines with diverse journalist groups, and developing a long-term plan in partnership with a new chief diversity officer," the board said in the letter. "But beyond that we want to be clear that these changes touch every aspect of how we operate through five foundational pillars -- Accountability, Membership, Inclusion, Good Governance, and Ethics & Transparency."

However, backlash continued from companies and individuals who felt the proposed reforms didn't go far enough. Netflix' co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced they would boycott all HFPA events until "meaningful changes are made."

“We don’t believe these proposed new policies — particularly around the size and speed of membership growth — will tackle the HFPA’s systemic diversity and inclusion challenges, or the lack of clear standards for how your members should operate,” Sarandos said. “So we’re stopping any activities with your organization until more meaningful changes are made. Netflix and many of the talent and creators we work with cannot ignore the HFPA’s collective failure to address these crucial issues with urgency and rigor.”

Amazon, WarnerMedia, and Tom Cruise have also distanced themselves from HFPA, with Cruise choosing to return his three Golden Globe trophies.
