Hollywood Hospital Named Among Top In U.S. For Patient Safety

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Southern California Hospitals at Hollywood and Culver City received the 2021 Patient Safety Excellence Award for the fourth year in a row, the hospital system announced this month.

This data was released by Healthgrades and measures the top 5 percent of all acute care hospitals in the U.S.

"Our investment in quality and safety initiatives, including starting our journey to become a High Reliability Organization, has resulted in being among the top 5 percent in the nation for Patient Safety Excellence every year since 2018," CEO Michael Klepin, Southern California Hospital at Culver City, said in a statement.

The data measures patient safety events, including collapsed lungs, hip fractures due to in-hospital falls, pressure or bed sores and catheter-related bloodstream infections. Healthgrades found that patients treated in 2021 Patient Safety Excellence Award-winning hospitals were, on average:

• 50.3% less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.
• 60.3% less likely to experience an in-hospital fall resulting in hip fracture, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.
• 66.5% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.
• 65.4% less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at non- recipient hospitals.

Healthgrades hospital quality methodologies are calculated using statistics from Healthgrades Patient Safety Ratings and Excellence Award methodology, which is based primarily on AHRQ technical specifications to MedPAR data for years 2017 through 2019. This represents three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.

Southern California Hospitals includes both the 420-bed Southern California Hospital at Culver City and 100-bed Hollywood hospital. They have served generations of West Los Angeles and Hollywood residents.

"Our patients—along with our physicians and staff—benefit from having a nationally recognized safe hospital close to home, especially during and post-pandemic," added Administrator Luis Angel, Southern California Hospital at Hollywood.

The full-service acute care hospitals offer a comprehensive array of programs and services, including a paramedic-receiving ER in Culver City and 24/7 urgent care in Hollywood. The hospital has also been on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.
