Hollywood Today: All Space Considered at Griffith Observatory

Also: 'Drive' starring Ryan Gosling returns to ArcLight Hollywood and a couple of new plays open around town.

Griffith Observatory's free monthly program, All Space Considered, is scheduled for Friday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The speakers are Dr. Jess F. Adkins, a paleoclimatologist and professor of geochemistry, and Joao Teixeira of the JPL Center for Climate Science. Topics of discussion include: hidden great lakes on Europa, beautiful astronomical images and a January sky report. Seating is first come, first served.

  • Missed Drive starring Ryan Gosling the first time around? The movie is returning for a week-long showing at ArcLight Hollywood starting Friday. Co-star Albert Brooks will be at the Q&A tonight after the 7:20 p.m. show and stay to introduce the 9:50 p.m. show.
  • American Cinematheque will present a "Super 80s" double-feature screening of The Goonies and Stand by Me at the Egyptian Theatre starting at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $11.
  • Sixth Avenue theater company presents the opening performance of Nerve at 8 p.m. The play, based on the premise that "first dates suck," is by Adam Szymkowicz and stars Adam Silver and Anna Rubley.   • Fruit Fly, written and performed by Leslie Jordan, will begin performances at the Celebration Theatre. Friday's show starts at 8 p.m. The comedy asks the question "Do gay men become their mothers?": Shows continue through Feb. 18. Celebration Theatre, 7051B Santa Monica Blvd.
  • Across town, First Fridays resumes at the Natural History Museum. From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., the evening includes a live performance by Mariachi El Bronx and El-Haru Kuroi, and KCRW DJs Anthony Valadez and Travis Holocomb. Dr. Michael Shermer will give a lecture on "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies—How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them As Truths.” Presale and admission tickets are sold out, but a limited number of concert and admission tickets will be available at the museum’s south entrance starting at 5 p.m.
