"The Hunger Games" Dominates Weekend Box Office

The third movie in the series reportedly earned more than $121.9 million in domestic box office receipts.

To no one’s surprise, the latest installment of “The Hunger Games” film series dominated theaters over the weekend with $121.9 million in domestic box office receipts, according to final figures released today.

The success of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” dwarfed Disney’s “Big Hero 6,” which earned $20.1 million to land in second place, according to Rentrak.

The big-budget sci-fi epic “Interstellar” placed third with $15.3 million, followed by the comedy sequel “Dumb and Dumber To,” which collected $14.1 million.

Ben Affleck’s mystery thriller “Gone Girl” earned $2.8 million to take fifth place.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Beyond The Lights” ($2.6 million); “St. Vincent” ($2.3 million); “Fury” ($1.9 million); “Birdman” ($1.8 million); and “The Theory of Everything” ($1.5 million).
