Local Restaurants Help Teens Prepare For Virtual Marathon

Sixteen Hollywood teenagers will run through Griffith Park this Sunday, recording their distance and times on their phone.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Sixteen Hollywood teenagers are gearing up for a virtual marathon in Griffith Park, and restaurants in the community are helping them load up on carbs before the big run. Although the marathon will look different in 2021, the traditional "Carbo Load" dinner is still on, with seven restaurants stepping up to feed the runners.

While the L.A. Marathon was postponed until the fall, Students Run Los Angeles will allow participants to record their distance and time electronically for those who want to set out now. Now, teens from the Hollywood Police Activities League (PAL) will run through Griffith Park on Sunday, while the dinner will be held at Wood & Vine at 6:30 p.m. Friday night.

Traditionally, the feast is hosted at Wood & Vine on the Friday night before the L.A. marathon. This year, Pink's Hot Dogs, Fabiolus Cucina, L'Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, Northern Cafe, St. Felix, and McDonalds will also take part, offering a carbohydrate-filled sampling over their various menus.

“When I think of all these restaurants - having been closed for much of the last year and having their own struggles - immediately stepping up and wanting to support our kids, I am so moved.” said Kitty Gordillo, Executive Director. “The Hollywood community amazes me with its kindness, and willingness to make something special happen for its diverse youth.”

The team of runners from the Hollywood Police Activities League (PAL) has been training for the marathon since August, running on their own or in small groups to keep with coronavirus safety guidelines.
