HOLLYWOOD, CA — A man jumped about 60 feet from above the Dolby Theatre to his death Friday afternoon, despite a major effort to safely bring him down.

The situation began around 8:32 a.m. at the Hollywood and Highland shopping center. Firefighters, police officers, mental health professionals, and a psychologist attempted to talk the man down. LAFD also sent up a rescue air cushion and rope system with harnesses to help mental health professionals safely approach the patient.

Nicholas Prange of the LAFD said around 2 p.m., the man jumped from his perch into an area the rescue cushion was not able to access. Firefighter-paramedics were on the scene to help the man, but he was beyond medical help
