Here's what to see and what to skip this weekend:
“Creed II” — Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Sylvester Stallone, directed by Steven Caple Jr.
The power of grit, passion and resilience is tested in Steven Caple Jr.’s “Creed II,” the latest chapter in the “Rocky” saga and the next installment of the “Creed” franchise.
In the new boxing movie, Michael B. Jordan reprises his role as Adonis Creed, the illegitimate son of the late former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. Also returning are Sylvester Stallone as Adonis’s mentor Rocky Balboa and Tessa Thompson as the young boxer’s longtime girlfriend Bianca.
Set three years after the events of the original film, the follow-up shows Adonis conflicted and trapped living in his father’s shadows. As he struggles to reconcile his own abilities with his father’s legacy, Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) — son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), the Russian boxer who killed Apollo in the ring three decades earlier — challenges Adonis to a boxing match. Will history repeat itself for Adonis?
See it. The sports drama delivers powerful punches, despite its predictable plot.

"The Favourite" — Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos
Loyalty and ambition clash in Yorgos Lanthimos' latest film based on a true story about three brilliant women behaving badly.
At the center of the 18th century period drama is the frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), ruler of Great Britain, who is notoriously meek, plagued by incessant ill health and beset with deep insecurity from 17 failed pregnancies.
Because of her fragile state, the monarch has only one confidante: her life-long friend, Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), who comes to the Queen's aid and helps handle the country’s day-to-day affairs. That is, until the arrival of Abigail Masham (Emma Stone), Sarah’s fallen noble cousin who joins the royal household as a lowly maid.
As the politics of war become increasingly demanding for Sarah, Abigail makes herself indispensable to the Queen, setting in motion her epic trajectory to become the Queen's new “favourite.”
See it. The three leads reign supreme delivering dazzling and nuanced performances, anchored by Lanthimos’s creative and exciting style.

“Ralph Breaks the Internet” — John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, directed by Phil Johnston and Rich Moore
Remember the video-game villain Ralph and his fellow misfit, the race-car driving whiz Vanellope, from the 2012 box-office hit animation “Wreck-It Ralph”? Well, they’re back for another round of unforgettable shenanigans — but this time, the pair attempts to navigate the vast and complex world of the internet.
The sequel welcomes back the original cast, including John C. Reilly, who provides the voice of Ralph, and Sarah Silverman, who lends her voice to Vanellope.
When Vanellope laments that her video game, Sugar Rush, is getting somewhat stale and boring, Ralph helps his best friend regain that much-needed oomph. But his plans don’t pan out well, wreaking havoc in the arcade world.
Soon, the two best pals must travel to the World Wide Web in order to save Vanellope’s arcade game. Can their friendship survive their personal differences?
See it. Simply put, the movie is filled with never-ending LOLs.
Watch the trailer:
"Roma" — Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, directed by Alfonson Cuaron
Drawing from the personal memories of Oscar-winning writer-director Alfonso Cuaron's youth, this film takes audiences on a poignant journey that chronicles one year in the life of a middle-class family in 1970s Mexico City.
Winner of the Golden Lion at this year's Venice Film Festival, "Roma" portrays Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a live-in maid to a large upper middle class family in Mexico City's Roma district.
When the family matriarch Sofia (Marina de Tavira) is faced with a seemingly insurmountable difficulty, Cleo helps her boss unwaveringly, despite her own crisis-ridden circumstances. Their bond paints a story of compassion and loyalty that transcends cultural, social and economic boundaries.
See it. The film in black and white is spellbinding and well-crafted, showing Cuaron's incredible technical prowess as a director.
Watch the trailer:
“Robin Hood” — Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, directed by Otto Bathurst
Otto Bathurst’s “Robin Hood” is an all-new take on the legendary heroic outlaw originally portrayed in English folklore.
In this latest movie iteration, Taron Egerton plays Robin, the Lord of Loxley, a nobleman who returns from war haunted, scarred and seeking solace. He soon finds out that his one true love Marian (Eve Hewson) is now married to a politician named Will. Adding insult to injury is the dysfunctional state of his hometown, Nottingham, which has become a portrait of inequality and injustice brought upon by a corrupt government.
As Robin grows increasingly disillusioned, John (Jamie Foxx), an enemy soldier who has become his unlikely loyal friend, shepherds and mentors the young man, helping him complete his transformation into the hooded avenger.
Skip it. While Egerton is convincing, the script feels too pat and contrived.
