Survival is the theme of this delightful adaptation of Thomas Cullinan's 1966 Southern Gothic novel. Set during the Civil War, two teachers (Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst) and their five students give shelter to a wounded Yankee soldier (Colin Farrell) at their boarding school. Queue the seduction, sexual awakenings and jealousy in this slow-burn thriller.

See it. Despite the script's questionable depiction of the war, the movie is buoyed by excellent performances, stylish direction and poetic cinematography.

"The Big Sick" — Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, directed by Michael Showalter

Looking for a date movie? Here's one that will melt your heart: "The Big Sick" is the endearing and incredible love story between a young Pakistani comic (Kumail Nanjiani) and his girlfriend Emily (Zoe Kazan), who has fallen inexplicably "sick." Nanjiani and his wife/co-writer Emily V. Gordon crafted this rom-com out of her real-life medical crisis and their culturally conflicted relationship.

See it. "The Big Sick" has big laughs — and big jolts.

"Transformers: The Last Knight" — Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel, directed by Michael Bay

Autobot leader Optimus Prime makes a dramatic shift in the fifth film in the "Transformers" movie franchise. While previously portrayed as a friend and protector to earth, he is now a foe. Sound odd? It is. Meanwhile, human leader Cade (Mark Wahlberg) and his followers are now reduced to mere caricatures. The movie's visual effects are extraordinary, but all in all, this simulacrum of "Armageddon" disappoints.
