“Deadpool 2” — Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, directed by David Leitch
Ryan Reynolds returns as the "merc with a mouth," in the sequel to the 2016 mega-hit "Deadpool."
This time around, the indestructible mercenary has settled into a regular ritual, spending his life dispatching baddies and romancing the love of his life, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) — that is, until he becomes depressed, and assembles his own team of super-heroes to fight Cable (Josh Brolin), an evil time-traveling cyborg from the future.
See it. The sequel is quirkily entertaining with a beating heart.

“Book Club” — Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen, directed by Bill Holderman
Who would have thought that a certain controversial S&M erotica could ignite profound change in the lives of four 60-something-year-old women? This is exactly what transpires in Bill Holderman’s directorial debut about self-worth, friendship and love, starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen as four lifelong friends.
When famous hotelier Vivian (Fonda) chooses the infamous “Fifty Shades Of Grey” as her group's next book club read, her friends cannot suspend their disbelief. Federal judge Sharon (Bergen) feels the need to opine in protest, while chef Carol (Steenburgen) and widowed homemaker Diane (Keaton) simply chuckle to themselves. But after everything said and done, the quartet of close elderly friends agree to give it a try.
See it. Don't let the silly premise discourage you. You'll be amazed at the collective brilliance of the the four leads.

“First Reformed” — Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, directed by Paul Schrader
Ethan Hawke stars as a small-town clergyman plagued by insurmountable despair in Paul Schrader’s thriller-drama about a crisis of faith.
Set in upstate New York, the movie centers around First Reformed Church’s pastor Ernst Toller (Hawke), a reverend racked by guilt over the death of his military son killed in Iraq and his painful divorce from his wife. Solitary and reflective, the clergyman spends his days tending to his dwindling congregation and his nights recording his thoughts in a journal while drinking away his loneliness and sorrows.
In one of those meditative evenings, pregnant Mary, one of his congregants, implores Reverend Toller to counsel her depressed husband who’s on the verge of committing suicide. In the wake of shocking events, Mary gets closer to the reverend, leaving him torn between spirit and flesh.
See it. Hawke’s sublime intensity is anchored by Seyfried’s dramatic gravitas, while Schrader’s magnificent direction brings forth his introspective take on the war between faith and personal desires.
Watch the trailer:
“Show Dogs” — Ludacris, Will Arnett, directed by Raja Gosnell
To stop a series of animal thefts, Max, an NYPD rottweiler police dog (voiced by Ludacris), goes undercover as a show dog in the prestigious Canini Invitational, along with his human partner, FBI Agent Frank Mosley (Will Arnett). But can this unlikely pair of buddy cops solve their biggest case yet, given that Max and Mosley don’t see eye-to-eye?
Skip it. The screenplay is lackluster, and the plot expositions are too much to bear.
