British filmmaker Terence Davies’ “A Quiet Passion” tells the life story of one of the greatest American poets, Emily Dickinson (Cynthia Nixon). The film is a compelling dissection of the writer’s emotional and intellectual independence and her intense relationship with her parents (Keith Carradine, Joana Bacon) and siblings (Duncan Duff, Jennifer Ehle). Davies’ direction is thoughtful while Nixon’s performance exudes dramatic gravitas.

See it. “A Quiet Passion” is delicately articulated with colorful imagery and comes together like poetry in motion.

“The Fate of the Furious” — Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, directed by F. Gary Gray

This time, it is the super-dark tone of "The Fate of the Furious" that revs up the "Fast & Furious" franchise. In the latest installment (number 8), Dom (Vin Diesel) betrays his family and aligns himself with Ciper (Charlize Theron), an evil genius/high-tech terrorist. Does the movie make any sense whatsoever? NO! But despite the shockingly absurd plot, there are plenty of insane car chases and intriguing twists will leave moviegoers wanting more.

See it. Wondering about Helen Mirren’s uncredited role in the movie? Now, that’s another good reason to go see “The Fate of the Furious.”

“The Lost City of Z” — Charlie Hunnam, Sienna Miller, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, directed by James Gray

A film adaptation of David Grann’s non-fiction bestseller of the same name, “The Lost City of Z (pronounced zed)” tells the story of Col. Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), a British officer whose life-long passion is to prove that a lost civilization once inhabited the jungles of the Amazon. Sienna Miller plays Fawcett’s wife, while Robert Pattinson portrays his loyal sidekick. James Gray’s film is unapologetically classical in form with breathtaking cinematography, an enchanting score and a trio of glowing performances: Hunnam is magnetic; Miller is forceful; Pattison is terrific.

See it. Despite the film’s sluggish first act, “The Lost City of Z” is hauntingly beautiful.
