“Mile 22” — Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Cohan, directed by Peter Berg
“Mile 22” marks the fourth collaboration between Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg, following their highly successful films “Patriot’s Day,” “Deep Horizon” and “Lone Survivor.”
In the duo’s latest project, Wahlberg plays James Silva, a senior-ranking CIA operative tasked to extract a foreign intelligence asset who’s in possession of extremely sensitive information that could stop one of the deadliest attacks on American soil.
Aided by the CIA’s most lethal paramilitary team, Silva must retrieve and transport foreign national Li Noor (Iko Uwais) from an American Embassy in Southeast Asia to a military plane ready for immediate departure — covering a distance of 22 miles.
As the elite team races against time, they are faced with major setbacks brought upon by bureaucrats and street gangs, all hell-bent on stopping the extraction.
See it. The daring and intense action sequences elevate this movie despite its less appealing screenplay.

“Crazy Rich Asians” — Michelle Yeoh, Constance Wu, Henry Golding, directed by Jon M. Chu
Money and class collide with love and romance in director Jon M. Chu’s latest film, which features the first all-Asian ensemble in a contemporary Hollywood cinema in 25 years since “Joy Luck Club.”
Adapted from Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel about cultures and eccentricities, the romantic comedy follows the story of Rachel Chu (Contance Wu), a New Yorker who embarks on her first-ever trip to Asia with her long-time boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding).
What ensues is a myriad of surprises, jealousy, and intrigue, as Rachel discovers that Nick is a member of a Singaporean dynasty. Will their love prevail as the young woman tries to win over Nick’s mom (Michelle Yeoh)?
See it. The film is ostentatiously and crazily delightful. Did you know that all of the dazzling jewelry pieces worn by the principal cast in the movie are authentic?

“Alpha” — Kodi Smit-McPhee, directed by Albert Hughes
This film, set in prehistoric age, tells the story of 17-year-old Keda (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who, destined to take over his father’s clan of hunters, accompanies him on a hunting trip.
As they reach the hunting grounds, the father-son duo encounters a raging bison, which suddenly charges, throwing Keda off the cliff. With a heavy heart, Keda's dad, Tau (Johannes Haukur Johannesson), heads home leaving the soft-hearted young man for dead.
But in a twist of fate, Keda survives the fall. Will he be able to endure nine months of harsh winter and the pangs of looming predators? Can he find his way back home with the help of his newfound friend, a lone wolf abandoned by its pack?
See it. The English-subtitled movie is poignant and visually thrilling, notwithstanding some unwelcomed clichés along the way.
