Movies Out This Weekend
“Ready Player One” — Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, directed by Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s gamer fantasy novel transports audiences to a spectacular virtual reality dreamscape with a wistful affection for 1980s pop-culture.
Set in a dystopian 2045, the film paints a world that is utterly grim and hopeless. With most of humanity beset by poverty and unemployment, people spend their days entering a virtual universe called OASIS, where they can escape their dreary lives and play a reality-bending game to hunt for a precious “Easter egg.” The first to discover the treasure can take control of this alternative digital world.
At the center of the quest is our young hero, Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), an obsessive gamer who will soon learn that there’s more to the game than meets the eye, when he encounters his cyber-crush Samantha (Olivia Cooke) in the real world.
See it. Spielberg’s sci-fi epic is a coming-of-age feature with loads of heart and stunning visuals rendered in both gritty live action and glossy CGI.

“Finding Your Feet” — Imelda Staunton, Joanna Lumley, Timothy Spall, directed by Richard Loncraine
“Wimbledon” director Richard Loncraine’s latest film is a story about second chances in life and love, exploring themes of friendship, grief and fears of the unknown. In the film, Imelda Staunton plays Sandra Abbott, a haughty middle-class woman who discovers that her husband (John Sessions) is having an affair with her best friend (Josie Lawrence).
Feeling despondent, Sandra visits her bohemian sister, Bif (Celia Imrie), in London. Both are seemingly at odds in every conceivable way— that is until Bif introduces Sandra to her colorful, free-spirited set of friends — retirees Charlie (Timothy Spall), Jackie (Joanna Lumley), and Ted (David Hayman) — who show her the path to unbridled passion for life.
See it. With captivating performances from a talented cast of British screen greats, the film is a breath of fresh air with a delightful sound track.

“Acrimony” — Taraji P. Henson, Lyriq Bent, Crystle Stewart, directed by Tyler Perry
What happens when love turns into toxic fury seeping through the veins of a betrayed wife? This is the premise of Tyler Perry’s gripping thriller, “Acrimony,” which stars Taraji P. Henson as Melinda, a smart, alluring woman who becomes a force to be reckoned with after she's scorned by her husband, Robert (Lyriq Bent).
For the past 18 years, Melinda’s love for Robert has kept their marriage afloat, despite his broken promises and damaging missteps. However, when she decides she's had enough of his lies and deceit, she makes sure Robert feels her rage and confronts him about an affair with his old flame, Diana (Crystle Stewart).
Skip it. With a wobbly screenplay, the narrative feels overwrought in which case the movie's message or its intent is unclear.
