"Last Flag Flying" — starring Steve Carell as a veteran burying his late Marine son — and "Lady Bird" — in which Saoirse Ronan plays a discontented teen trying to change her life — explore some heavy subject matter but still manage to weave in moments of humor and lightness.

“Thor: Ragnarok” — Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, directed by Taika Waititi
In "Thor: Ragnarok," the Norse God of thunder (Chris Hemsworth) embarks on an intergalactic quest with Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to face off against his super villain sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett), and prevent her from gaining power in the realm of Asgard. However, Thor is faced with a tough choice when he realizes that in order to defeat Hela, he must also destroy Asgard. Hemsworth’s near-flawless comedic timing, along with a cheeky screenplay and Waititi’s confident direction, make the third installment in Marvel's "Thor" series the best of the bunch.
See it. This is one super Marvel-ous movie — even if you haven't seen the first two "Thor" installments.

"Lady Bird" — Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, directed by Greta Gerwig
Greta Gerwig's solo directorial debut is a coming-of-age film about an artistically talented high school senior, Christine McPherson (Saoirse Ronan). To escape her monotonous suburban life, the teenager, who is affectionately known as Lady Bird, dreams of the excitement and vibrancy of an East Coast cosmopolitan culture, causing some riffs with her mother (Laurie Metcalf) along the way.
See it. Gerwig's adept talent behind the camera is on full display in this ebullient and well-acted film.

“A Bad Moms Christmas” — Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore
Let the shenanigans begin! The heroines from the 2016 comedy “Bad Moms” are back for another round of gags and laughs. This time around, the three moms (Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn) are all set for a very relaxing, toned-down Christmas — that is, until their exasperating mothers (Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines and Susan Sarandon) all show up the week before the holidays. Despite being too bold at times, the mother-daughter comedy works because of the stars’ outstanding comic chops.
See it. If you're in the mood for something humorous and light-hearted this weekend, these ladies will win you over.

"Last Flag Flying" — Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell, Laurence Fishburne, directed by Richard Linklater
In Richard Linklater's sequel to the 1973 film "The Last Detail," former Navy Corps medic Larry "Doc" Shepherd (Steve Carell) reunites with his old ex-Marines friends Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston) and Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) after 30 years. As the three men drive up the Eastern seaboard to bring the casket of Doc's son — a Marine killed in the Iraq War — to its final resting place, they reminisce about their time in Vietnam and paint an agonizing portrait of war.
See it. Linklater's eye-catching, heartfelt approach makes this dramedy meaningful and rewarding.
