History Alive: The Ancestral Hispanic Families of Lemon Grove

Gilbert Nuñez, George Ceseña and Helen Bonilla will recall life in the old neighborhoods of the city.

Descendants of Lemon Grove’s ancestral Hispanic families, stretching back to the beginning of the 20th century, will recall life in the old neighborhoods of Olive Street, North Avenue and Church Street at the next History Alive presentation, hosted by the Lemon Grove Historical Society.

Gilbert Nuñez, George Ceseña and Helen Bonilla were born and raised in Lemon Grove and emerged from strong kinship groups that also encompassed the Alvarez, Castellanos, Oyos, and Lieres families who live on in the city today. Their memories of community festivities, the early days of St. John of the Cross Church, sports, family folklore, education, military service, playtime in vacant lots, the orchard landscape, and the diverse jobs that kept the Great Depression wolf from the door linger on in the oral histories of each family.

Gilbert, George and Helen, and their children's children, continue to help forge Lemon Grove's evolving history. With the affection, humor and insight of native sons and daughters, this trio will look back at our town in a not-to-be-missed edition of History Alive, starting at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in the H. Lee House Cultural Center in Civic Center Park, 3205 Olive St.
