Lee House to Host Film Night Thursday

The Lemon Grove Historical Society will present FILM NIGHT AT LEE  at 7 p.m. Thursday in the H. Lee House Cultural Center, 3205 Olive, Lemon Grove.  

Two Emmy Award-winning historical documentaries by Jack Ofield will be accompanied by artifacts from the films.

"Balboa Park:  A Living Legend" features original black and white and color footage from the 1915 and 1935 expositions that marked the birth and rejuvenation of the park.  The unique beauty and attractions that made the park one of the world's great urban spaces are fondly recalled by eye witnesses to the expositions.  The late San Diego Congressman Lionel Van Deerlin narrates the half-hour production. 

"Inheritance," the classic study of vanishing indigenous crafts and changing work patterns, originally aired as a one-hour PBS Special-of-the-Week.  The half-hour version screening on FILM NIGHT AT LEE features three of the craftsmen, including Harvey Ward, 85, scoop shovel carver; Elizabeth Proper, 53, split white oak basket maker; and John Forshee, 90, tinsmith.  The production is the sole filmed record of these authentic, generational artisans at work in their homes in New York State.  All are deceased. 

The program is free, though donations are greatly appreciated to help keep the 35-year-old "History Alive" series going.  Programs are suitable for ages 13 and over.  Popcorn and lemonade will be available.
