Eleven City Los Angeles opens in mid-Wilshire

There are lots of delicatessen’s in New York – Katz’s, Carnegie Deli and Mile End and a few in Los Angeles – Canter’s and Langer’s. Now with the opening of Eleven City Los Angeles, mid Wilshire has a great delicatessen/diner in the heart of the city that also serves beer, wine and cocktails.

Bradley Rubin, who also owns Eleven City Diner in Chicago, took over the 6,000 square foot art deco space in 2016 and redesigned it to include a retro black and white tiled floor; comfy black leather booths; a long rectangular fountain bar offering wine, beer, cocktails, shakes, floats, malts and sodas; neon signs above the windows overlooking Wilshire Boulevard and an old fashioned candy counter.

We started our huge late afternoon early dinner at Eleven City Los Angeles with a frothy cold house made root beer. The menu truly has something for everyone. Breakfast is served all day featuring egg dishes, a healthy quinoa scramble bowl, pancakes, waffles, Challah French toast and lox and latke, smoked fish and lox, bagel tomato and onion plates.

First we sampled the homemade pickles which were perfectly crunchy and tart. We also tried the crispy latkes with apple sauce and sour cream and the chopped liver, all off of the Nosh section of the menu.

Bradley brought us a selection of six meats, sans bread, to try including corned beef, pastrami, shaved smoked brisket, slow roasted brisket, rare roast beef and turkey pastrami. All were delicious and made it hard to choose one for a sandwich. We also tried the perfectly grilled salami sandwich with melted Swiss cheese on Challah and the huge Zenith sandwich with corned beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing on rye bread. Each sandwich can easily feed three people and both were exceptionally good.

The brisket dinner is scrumptious with slow roasted tender brisket, carrots and potatoes. It’s offered daily at 4 pm after hours of cooking.

I was surprised at the wide variety of great salads offered, including a big veggie Cobb with mushrooms, cauliflower, avocado, carrots and Brussels Sprouts and the Amazing Kale with kale, orange, apples, black currants, tomatoes, candied pecans and white cheddar cheese. My vegetarian friends would love both of these hearty salads.

There are so many healthy, vegan and vegetarian options that it would be easy to dine at Eleven City Los Angeles with a large group of people with varying tastes and dietary needs.

The side salads are just as fresh and interesting as the sandwiches, including kale, couscous, tabbouleh, quinoa and roasted vegetables options.

There’s also a fantastic melt section on the menu with a patty melt, turkey melt, tuna melt, Moshe crista with ham, turkey and Swiss and a French dip.

Eleven City Los Angeles has one of the best turkey burgers I have ever tasted, using fresh daily ground turkey and adding sage, rosemary, Swiss and a spicy mayo to make a satisfying and tasty sandwich.

Kids will love the mountains of crispy onion rings and fries, mac and cheese with tons of topping options, build your own grilled cheese and shakes, malts, floats and sundaes.

Desserts are huge and include Winston pies, banana split, apple cobbler, carrot cake, chocolate cake and Junior’s cheesecake.

And, of course, there’s the soups. Fresh tomato basil, Bubbie’s chicken soup, Matzo ball and egg noodle or rice.

Everything I ate at Eleven City Los Angeles was delicious. I really loved the vast choice of menu options, making it easy for me to return again and again with friends who are carnivores, vegans and vegetarians.
