Located next to Pasadena’s Union restaurant, U Street Pizza cooks up tasty New York style pies with California ingredients.

Previously occupied by the champagne bar Pop!, the space is still long and narrow, but now it offers lots of lively patio seating. Guests can also choose to dine inside and watch the pizza action in the huge open kitchen.

U Street’s pizza is made with a blend of organic Skagit and Glacier Peak flours, both from Burlington Washington. This provides a unique light crisp crust and a good chew with body and bite.

Expecting great pizza, we were surprised at the tasty appetizers including the Green Goddess and Caesar salads and the outstanding Japanese eggplant. There is also a good roasted cauliflower appetizer.

Choose from eight pies including cheese; a tomato and red pepper red; white with cream, ricotta and provolone; sausage and fennel; vodka, cream and pepperoni; Petaluma style; pepperoni and a clam pizza.

We sampled the Petaluma and pepperoni, both were deliciously crisp, full of good toppings and very filling.

Desserts include zeppolies with warm nutella, risotto rice pudding with a fig cherry marmalade and soft serve ice cream in a variety of flavors with sprinkles, chocolate chips and candied nuts.

U Street Pizza is located at 33 E. Union Street in Pasadena, 626.605.0340, open daily from 4 to 9pm.
