3 Toluca Lake Eateries Close Within the Past Year

R.I.P. Chez Nous, Marie Callendars and Papoos.

I am in restaurant mourning. I am grieving yet another eatery loss in Toluca Lake. After three decades, .

I've been a regular breakfast diner at the Riverside Drive restaurant and bakery for over 10 year and I usually come in two or three times a week. A few months ago I noticed a sign over paper covered walls reading "closed for renovations."  After talking with several of their former employees, I learned Ches Nous is permanently closed.

I'll miss sitting in my favorite booth sharing Sunday brunch with my mom. I'll miss my favorite "country omelette" and strong cappuccino. I'll miss dropping by during neighborhood walks to pick up some of their killer pastries. Mostly, I'll miss chatting with the many waiters and busbuys I have become friends with over the past decade.

This closure is devastating enough, but it comes on the heels of the closings of long time neighborhood restaurants and . A Chase Bank branch is currently being constructed on the demolished Marie Callendars site while an empy Papoos still stands deserted.

Marie Callendars served up diner fare and their famous pies for over 40 years.  Papoos was open for over 60 years cooking countless hot dogs and hamburgers.  Sure, I like that now Toluca Lake has a stand and the lovely Sweetsalt Food Shop and Café, but I am still very sad that my favorite eateries are gone.
