A Growing Waistline (and Problem)

Why don't we care that we're burdening our kids' futures and the economy with our daily choices?

Ok. I get it. You’re sick of hearing about the ever-expanding problem of epidemic overweight and obesity (OW/O). We live in a free country and no one should preach to you about your food and exercise choices. It’s your business, right?

Sure. That’s one way to look at it. Hey, I don’t like being told how to live my life either. But what about the billions of dollars spent on obesity-related illnesses and conditions? What about the fact that 2/3 (more, according to this Newsweek article) of us who could live a much more enjoyable and physically vital life? What about the fact that most of the physical deterioration we normally ascribe to aging is often primarily caused by, and undeniably accelerated by, the internal effects (increased cardiovascular disease, incidence of stroke and diabetes) of OW/O? What about the orthopedic injuries which are much more prevalent and severe because of a combination of de-conditioning and OW/O? What about all the meds, with their side-effects that we pump into our systems to soften the symptoms of OW/O conditions, rather than addressing the root cause?

I know it’s scary. I know you’ve tried to address it before. I know there’s a ton of confusing and conflicting information out there. But there are very reliable resources available too. Most family practice MDs will recommend diet and exercise for their patients on this track, but many have no direct relationships with the experts who can help their patients turn things around and start enjoying true healthcare, rather than the “sick care” most physicians are forced to provide. That’s why it’s all up to you.

Here’s what you should do:

1. Start with your doctor. Get clearance to begin an exercise program and a referral if she or he diagnoses a metabolic condition or indicates there is some other reason you should see a registered dietitian.

2. Look for private training or a group program run and supervised by nationally certified fitness trainers.

3. Integrate your preventive wellness team by providing contact info for each, to each.
