Soroptimist Intl. of the Tri-Valley Awards announcement

Press Release about recent award winners

Soroptimist International of the Tri-Valley community service club has announced the winners of two scholarship awards.

Violet Richardson Award
Madison Janes of Dublin High School is the winner of the annual Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award for her community service work with Guide Dogs for the Blind. The Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award honors young women for their volunteer action in their community. The goal of this award is to recognize young women who make their community and their world a better place through volunteerism.
Madison has raised 2 dogs for this agency over the last 3 years. “The time dedication that is required to raise a puppy into a working Guide Dog is substantial and requires real commitment on the part of the volunteer, Madison is a great example of teens committed to volunteer action” noted SITV President Michele Garcia. Madison was awarded $1000 for college expenses and a donation of $500 was made to Guide Dogs for the Blind in honor of Madison’s hard work. Madison intends to go to University of San Francisco and study nursing; her goal is to become an OBGYN nurse.

Dale Vaughn-Bowen Scholarship
Chloe Bercy of Dublin High School was chosen for the annual Soroptimist International of the Tri-Valley Dale Vaughn-Bowen Scholarship. This year the scholarship award is $1500. The annual Dale Vaughn Bowen Scholarship is awarded to a student who has lost a parent to cancer. This scholarship was established to honor past Soroptimist member Dale Vaughn Bowen of Pleasanton.
Chloe’s essay described the devastating loss of her father to cancer and the formative role he played in her life. “Her grit and determination to continue to excel in school, in life and help others is a true testament to the love her father showed her,” said Kelly Knabe, DVB Scholarship Chair. To honor her father’s memory, Chloe chose to focus on being the best helper and role model she could be for her family. She continued to volunteer for Kindred Hospice, while working diligently towards her education and career goals. Chloe will attend San Jose State University in the fall pursing a degree in computer science.
