PLEASANTON, CA — The Widmer-World Christmas lights display has been canceled this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Widmer-World is a Christmas light extravaganza that tends to draw more than 10,000 people each season to bask in the festive glow of hundreds of thousands of holiday lights.

Bob and Susan Widmer told fans on their website that they hoped to open, but don't feel it is safe given the current situation in Alameda County. They don't have the family staff to handle large crowds and ensure coronavirus precautions are met.

While the Widmers have decorated their yard since 1981, this would have been the 20th anniversary of the Widmers decorating their front and back yards.

"I wish all of you a happy holiday season and hope you and yours stay safe," wrote Bob Widmer. "We look forward to seeing all of our friends for a super 2021 production."

This is the second major Tri-Valley Christmas display to call off its 2020 plans due to concerns about the pandemic.

Rev. Deacon Dave recently announced his event featuring 600,000 lights, choir performances and the famed Proposal Bridge, where dozens of engagements have taken place, would not take place this year. Last year marked the 37th anniversary of Deacon Dave's Christmas display.
