24 Hour Fitness Shutters 13 Bay Area Gyms

Three South Bay gyms are among those that will be shuttered as the company files for bankruptcy.

SAN RAMON, CA — San Ramon-based 24 Hour Fitness has filed for bankruptcy, and the national gym chain has announced the closure more than 100 gyms, including 13 in the Bay Area.

Three South Bay locations are among those that will permanently close. All of the company’s seven Peninsula gyms will remain open.

  • Morgan Hill (850 Tennant Station)
  • San Jose-Capitol & Mckee (375A North Capitol Ave.)
  • Milpitas/Active (301 Jacklin Rd.)

The company has posted a list of the gyms that will permanently shutter.

“If it were not for COVID-19 and its devastating effects, we would not be filing for Chapter 11,” CEO Tony Ueber said in a statement. “We expect to have substantial financing with a path to restructuring our balance sheet and operations to ensure a resilient future.”

Despite the forced closures, 24 Hour Fitness said Monday in its Chapter 11 filings that it has secured $250 million in funding to support the reopening of its other locations by the end of June. Those locations had been closed for months because of coronavirus-related shutdowns.

24 Hour Fitness has 20 Peninsula/South Bay locations that will remain open.
