East Palo Alto Man Accused Of Committing Stabbing Spree

A 19-year-old man was accused of stabbing three people Monday evening.

SAN MATEO, CA — An East Palo Alto man was arrested following a series of stabbings in San Mateo Monday night that left three people injured.

Police caught the suspect, Alejandro Canche, 19, while he was wading into a lagoon shortly after police responded to stabbings that occurred in the BJ’s Restaurant parking lot and in the Edgewater Isle neighborhood.

Officers responded to BJ's Restaurant at Bridgepointe Shopping Center at 7:04 p.m., and found a victim who had been stabbed in the neck. Witnesses described a suspect who they said ran across Highway 92 from the shopping center, police said.

At 7:36 p.m., police received reports of two more stabbings along the lagoon in Edgewater Isle. Police approached a cyclist who had suffered stab wounds, and officers were then approached by another person who had been stabbed.

All three victims were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, San Mateo police said.

Around that time, officers found Canche wading in the lagoon and "acting erratically," according to police. He was arrested and booked at San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of multiple counts of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
