Historic San Mateo Home Rumored To Have Haunted Past Hits Market
The William and Rosalie Brown House, constructed in 1892, is one of the oldest in San Mateo and is considered by some to be haunted.

SAN MATEO, CA — A historic Queen Anne Victorian home in San Mateo that was once owned by the city’s fourth mayor is up for sale.
The William and Rosalie Brown House at 2 S. Delaware St., constructed in 1892, is one of the oldest in San Mateo and is considered by some to be haunted, the most recent owner told KPIX.
“It was just overgrown with vines into the house,” Cheryl Zuffi, the owner, told KPIX. “There were dead things in the house. There was a lot of debris.”

Zuffi renovated the home after she purchased it in 1998, but received feedback about it being haunted prior to the changes because it looked rundown and overgrown, she told the station.
The five-bedroom, 3.5-bath property was listed earlier this week for $2.6 million. According to a listing, it features a hexagonal tower, heritage oak tree and several out-buildings that include chicken coops.

Zuffi told the San Mateo Daily Journal that she hopes the new owner will care for the property like she did.
“I pray someone is going to buy it who is going to love it like we did. It’s been great, and it’s going to be really hard to leave,” Zuffi said.
