Kitten Rescued From Freeway Sign In Peninsula: See Photos
The kitten, a three-month old female, was trapped on the ledge of a freeway sign at least 50 feet above the ground near SFO.
SAN BRUNO, CA — On June 10, the Peninsula Humane Society received a frantic call from a worker at the San Francisco International Airport: a kitten was clinging to life on a freeway sign near the busy Highway 380 connector overpass and crying out for help.
The kitten, a three-month old female, was trapped on the ledge at least 50 feet above the ground. She could not climb up to the freeway, but even if she had, she would’ve found herself in the throes of fast-moving traffic, according to Buffy Tarbox, the communications manager for Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA.

A rescue staff member braced himself against the freeway barrier and used a sturdy net to capture the kitten and bring her to safety. Tarbox said that staff was worried the kitten would be scared off by the net and jump onto the road below, a fall that she likely wouldn’t have survived.

“We have no idea how the kitten ended up in her perilous situation or how long she had been stuck on the concrete base of the sign,” Tarbox said in a news release. “Thankfully someone noticed her and called us, and we were able to save her life.”
The kitten, which the animal shelter named Gwyneth — the name means “fortunate” and “blessed" — was found to be healthy. She had no identification and was not claimed.
