San Mateo Hillsdale Caltrain Station Reopens After Safety Upgrade
Local officials paid visits and voiced support for the new station, which has been closed since May 2020.

SAN MATEO, CA — Caltrain's Hillsdale Station in San Mateo reopened on Monday after an 11-month closure for a grade separation project that aimed to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and reduce traffic congestion.
Two Peninsula mayors paid a visit to the new station. San Mateo Mayor Eric Rodriguez appeared on the transit agency's Instagram and TikTok and Belmont Mayor Charles Stone posed for a picture next to the tracks.
According to Caltrain, the new, elevated station has moved approximately four blocks to the north at 28th Avenue in San Mateo. It also has a center-boarding platform, pedestrian underpass, a sheltered waiting area with seating, two parking lots and bicycle eLockers and racks.

“Caltrain is turning into the modern rail system the Bay Area deserves and the new Hillsdale Station captures much of what that means,” said Caltrain Board Chair Dev Davis in a news release last week. “It’s safer, more convenient, more accessible, more beautiful and more interconnected with the community around it.”
State Sen. Josh Becker said that the project, which eliminated the at-grade crossing at 25th Avenue, is "vitally necessary for both public safety and traffic mitigation."
