SAN MATEO, CA — A San Mateo eatery is among the eight Peninsula restaurants that received a surprise $100,000 donation in recent weeks from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, who said they were hoping to help keep their favorite local restaurants afloat during the coronavirus crisis.

The restaurants include some of Zuckerberg and Chan's personal favorites, Palo Alto Online reported. Restaurant owners can use the money however they like, whether to cover rent, pay out-of-work employees or cook meals for donation.

One of the recipients, Seiko Alba, who owns the Japanese restaurant Dohatsuten in Palo Alto, said the gift let her keep the restaurant open for takeout and rehire most of her kitchen staff to prepare meals for local hospitals and shelters, according to Palo Alto Online.
