San Mateo's Vault 164 Restaurant Closes Permanently

SAN MATEO, CA — After nine years in business, Vault 164, the popular New American restaurant in downtown San Mateo, became the latest casualty of the coronavirus pandemic on Saturday, as management announced the eatery was closing its doors at the end of that day.

"Since the start of the pandemic, I have seen this day coming," managing partner Brad Goldberg wrote on the restaurant's Facebook page Saturday morning. "Fortunately for us, we were able to find a buyer that allowed us to leave on our terms."

Goldberg thanked the restaurant's employees, his fellow managers and others who have supported it over the years.

The restaurant, which had reopened in late June for indoor and outdoor service, offered a long menu of contemporary American food, from Brussels sprouts chips to wild mushroom risotto to a number of burger options.

In 2015, CBS named Vault 164 one of the best burger spots in the Bay Area, calling its Vermont white cheddar offering "one of the region’s most flavorful burgers."

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a serious toll on restaurants and retailers in California and across the U.S., with a number of businesses declaring bankruptcy or closing permanently after suffering severe losses since March.
