SFO Exhibit Honoring Harvey Milk To Remain Permanently At Airport
Milk, who officials called a pioneering civil rights leader, was the first openly gay elected official in the state of California.

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT — An exhibit dedicated to Harvey Milk will be permanently displayed at San Francisco International Airport, airport officials announced on Friday.
The Bay Area Reporter reported the airport's decision last week.
A community-sourced temporary exhibit in honor of Milk — the late city supervisor who was the first openly gay elected official in the state of California — has been up at SFO since 2019 and will be relocated near the security checkpoint at Harvey Milk Terminal 1.

A second exhibit will be located at a passenger walkway connecting Harvey Milk Terminal 1 to customs at the International Terminal.
The Harvey Milk Terminal 1 opened in 2019 and features community-sourced photographs of Milk and the LGBTQ community in San Francisco in the 1970s. Milk, elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone the following year.

“Harvey Milk Terminal 1 honors the legacy of a pioneering civil rights leader,” Airport Director Ivar C. Satero said in a news release. “Our goal in this facility is to illuminate, educate and inspire action at a time in our history when we need to be clear and outspoken about human rights – as Harvey was for the LGBTQ community – but also for all communities of color. We are excited to bring the content of this exhibit – sourced from our own community – to a broader audience of global travelers, to ensure that the life and legacy of Harvey Milk is well-known around the world.”
