These Four Peninsula Peacocks Need A Home: Humane Society
Want to adopt a peacock (or four)? The Peninsula Humane Society is seeking adopters for two pairs of the beautiful birds.
SAN MATEO, CA — The Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA has a couple pairs of unusual animals in need of a new home: four domesticated peacocks, each pair including a male and a female.
“We currently have two pairs of beautiful peacocks at our shelter waiting for a new home,” said Buffy Martin Tarbox, the PHS/SPCA communications manager, in a press release. “Peafowl make excellent pets for people who live in rural areas and have the space the birds need to thrive.”
The adoption fee for a pair is $40. Each bird requires at least 80 square feet and ideally some kind of specialized habit, like a treehouse, to provide shelter and protect the bird from predators, the PHS/SPCA said.

“The four peacocks we have available for adoption were all surrendered to our shelter by their previous owner who could no longer care for them,” Tarbox said. “We are specifically seeking adopters with previous peafowl experience, and [who] will be able to provide the birds with the amount of space they require, and are committed to providing them the appropriate food, access to clean water and shelter.”
The PHS/SPCA recommends feeding the peacocks mixed grains like turkey or chicken feed, plus nuts, green vegetables and fruit. The birds also eat insects, amphibians and reptiles.
