Brookfield Crews Tackle Pool House Blaze, Possible HAZMAT Risk

Firefighters evacuated nearby residences as the heat and water could disperse the chlorine stored in the pool house as a gas.

BROOKFIELD, CT — The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a pool house blaze that broke out in the area of Cedar Hill shortly before 10 a.m. Friday.

First responders from both of the town's fire companies saw a large plume of smoke that could be seen from a distance, and a working fire with possible exposures to the main residence.

The large amount of chlorine tablets that were in the pool house presented a hazardous materials situation, according to fire officials, as the water and heat from the fire could potentially disperse that chlorine as a gas.

"Firefighters took appropriate precautions and evacuated some nearby residences," according to a statement from the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department Candlewood Company.
