Brookfield VFW Outreach Program to Assist New Haven Coast Guard

Brookfield VFW Member, Nicholas Nunnally, Initiates Outreach Program to Assist New Haven Guardsmen and their Families

Nicholas Nunnally retired last year from the U.S. Coast Guard. Due to his overseas service in the Persian Gulf he qualified to join the VFW. Hearing about the newly flourishing membership campaign taking place at the Jason D. Lewis Brookfield VFW Post, Nunnally joined this group of prior military wartime veterans that still wanted to serve their country.
Shortly after joining the VFW, the government experienced a partial shutdown which effected the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard’s parent agency. This meant active duty service members began missing paychecks. Because so many of his old unit members were deeply affected, living paycheck to paycheck, Nunnally asked if the Brookfield VFW could help. It resulted in an outreach program during which gift cards, food and toiletries were collected and delivered to the base in New Haven. Joining in the effort were the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Company and Country Kids Daycare.
In recognition of the effort the New Haven Chapter of the U.S.C.G Chief Petty Officer Association expressed in a commendation letter to the Brookfield VFW Post their sincere appreciation for the generous donations which helped Coast Guard members during the shutdown and for the compassion and selflessness rendered in their time of need.
