Barstool Sports Reviews Popular East Haven Pizzeria

EAST HAVEN, CT — One month after making his long-awaited visit to West Haven's Zuppardi's Apizza for his popular "One Bite" pizza review, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy was back in the New Haven area last week — this time to review John & Maria's Pizzeria in East Haven. Portnoy visited New Haven’s iconic pizzerias this past December and ultimately declared New Haven the "Pizza Capital of the World." He said Sally's was the best he's ever had.

Portnoy gave Sally's a 9.2, Modern Apizza on State Street an 8.8, Pepe's an 8.5 and Bar on Crown Street a 7.4. He said Modern and Pepe's were very close in quality and noted that Bar was more of a nightlife pizza, but was still good.

While he was in New Haven, everyone told him that he had to go to Zuppardi's Apizza in West Haven, which he visited last month. In his "One bite, everyone knows the rules" reviews, Portnoy samples a bite of cheese pizza and grades off his first impression (and then eats the rest of the slice). He gave Zuppardi's an 8.2 and then gave a bonus review of Zuppardi's famous sausage pie. He only samples cheese pizzas for the reviews, so it didn't count for the review but he said it was "excellent" and gave it an 8.6. Portnoy said he loved Zuppardi's but said Sally's is still the king in the area.

People kept telling Portnoy that there were other pizzerias in the New Haven area he had to try, so this time it was John & Maria's Pizzeria’s turn.

After taking “one bite,” Portnoy said that they don’t “(expletive) around with their pizza around these parts. They just don’t. Everything is really good.”

“Oh man, good pizza,” he said while taking a few more bites. He then gave John & Maria’s Pizzeria, located at 280 Foxon Road, an 8.5.

“New Haven never disappoints,” Portnoy said.

Another New Haven-area staple, Foxon Park soda, also made an appearance in the review.
