Mayor: Batten Down The Hatches As Tropical Storm Elsa Approaches

Elsa is expected to make landfall in CT, and specifically the shoreline including East Haven, very early Friday morning, mayor says.

EAST HAVEN, CT —Batten down the hatches, East Haven.

Elsa is expected to make landfall in Connecticut, and specifically the shoreline including East Haven, at around 4 a.m. Friday, Mayor Joseph A. Carfora said.

"As a shoreline community we are always concerned about the impact these storms will have on our community," he said, adding he's met with town public service, police and fire department heads "to make sure that they are prepared to deal with any impact from the storm."

And as the town gets ready, Carfora is asking residents to get ready, too.

"Please prepare your own home as well, secure any loose lawn furniture, have a supply of food, water and a flashlight," he said noting residents should "expect heavy winds, rain and isolated flooding."

"We expect that there may be the danger of falling trees due to the recent rainfall and saturated ground along with sustained winds associated with the storm. This may bring isolated power outages," he said, adding his staff has "already been in contact with United Illuminating to review our storm plans."

Carfora reminded folks about some important Do's and Don'ts during a storm event: Don't drive through standing water, it may be deeper than you expect. Do not approach downed wires, they may be energized and if using a generator make sure it is far from your house.

He also noted that due to the storm, the Senior Center will be closed Friday.
