EAST HAVEN, CT – Hundreds of homeowners who live along the Farm River bridges may be able to save significant money on their home insurance due to a change in flood zone designations approved by the Town Council.

At the most recent Town Council meeting, Town Engineer Kevin White told the council that a study has been completed on work done along the Farm River bridges – and that study shows that any possible floodwater would move quickly down the Farm River as opposed to being held by the bridges.

As a result of that study, White told the council, hundreds of homes may be able to be taken out of the areas previously designated as flood zone area, if the council voted to adopt the study’s findings.

The council quickly did just that - approving an ordinance making revisions to the town’s floodplain management ordinance.
White said that could be a “tremendous savings’’ to many homeowners, since flood zone homeowner insurance is far more costly than regular home insurance.

White was asked by the council which areas near the Farm River would be affected by the change in designation. He said basically the entire area from Moulthrop Street to the Maple Street Bridge.

Councilpersons asked White if the town would be contacting the homeowners in the area about the change in designation – and possible potential savings that can be reaped.

He said no that it was up to the homeowners to work directly with their banks and or insurance companies to see if their policies could be rewritten.
